UEFA Europe League – the Final

The biggest football event ever hold in Bucharest, the UEFA Europe League Final will take place on Wednesday 9th May at 21.45. Both sides that will be fighting  for the cup know each other very well, playing in the same Spanish league;  Atletico Madrid and Athetic Bilbao.

The venue for this event is National Arena or Arena Nationala, a modern 55.000 stadium and the city had been long waiting for a chance like this to show its newest architecture masterpiece. Less than one year old, it received lots of compliments from both officials and football players. But it also has a weak point; the pitch. The organizers are hoping that will be ok at the kick-off but, luckily for us, is not the most important thing in a football game :)

The actual stadium was built on the site of the former national stadium, called 23 August, the date of the former national day in Communist Romania. The largest stadium in the country, was not so great after all and used more for extravagant and costly communist parties rather than for sporting events. It was almost impossible to upgrade it so, despite some protests, the more natural solution was to demolish it and to build a newer one instead.

How to get at the stadium?

The stadium is relatively close to city center and there are many means of transport to it. The easiest way is by subway: M3 to “Piata Muncii”, then a 15 min walk.

There are also tram lines (1 and 34), buses (140) and trolleys (86 and 90) that can take you the stadium, but there are expected to be at least crowded.

Taxis are options, but you should be careful to exaggerated prices.

Getting back from the stadium will be a much greater challenge; just imagine 55.000 fans getting out at the same time. Luckily, the public transport (including subway) will work till late in the night.

On Wednesday, special buses will work to get fans from the International Airport to the Stadium and to the Fan Zones (“Piata Constitutiei” and “Piata George Enescu”)

So glad we are to host this event, that school will be closed on Wednesday (of course, trying to make traffic a little better) and 6 subway stops will be named after famous Romanian and foreign football players: Nicolae Dobrin, Ion Pârcălab, Gică Hagi, Llorente, Falcao and Rică Răducanu.

Getting in the stadium.

The entrance will be allowed starting with 18.45. There are 3 gates: Pierre de Coubertin Str. (for the Atleticho Madrid fans), Maior Coravu Str. and Basarabia Bd. (for the Athletico Bilbao fans). Of course, no guns, knifes , forks and spoons :)

The fan zones:

Two fan-zones will be organized in Bucharest from where both fans and locals will be able to watch the game on giant screens until 2.00. “Piata Constitutiei” will be reserved for Athletico Madrin fans, while supporters of Aheltico Bilbao will be watching the game from “Piata George Enescu”. From here, at 18.00, special buses will take the supporters to the stadium. Of course, there will be different buses for every team.

If you have questions, look for someone wearing a jacket which says “Pregunta me”, then you can ask him / her any question you have in Spanish.

Good luck for both. May the best team win !

Protests in Bucharest – the creative side

Bucharest is usually a calm city.  But for 8 days in a row, we have the largest protests since ’89 Revolution.

I am not going to insist on causes and reasons and what the results will be, even that there would be a lot of things to say. What is for sure is that this is the most creative protest ever :) . Take a look at next photos and what the protesters are demanding (of course, it sounds better in mother tongue).

For a better understanding, Traian Basescu is (still) our president and before that was a ship captain. And, of course, most of the slogans are against him and the Government. A friendly advice is that, even the protests are usually peaceful, violence can occur, so try to avoid Piata Universitatii, especially after 8-9 pm.

“The pirate. Wanted for all “great” privatisations in oil, banks, energy, industry, etc.”

“There’s no reason people laugh about you, Emil. You’re just the right size.” Emil Boc is our  Prime Minister.

Here are all the post-communist political parties, depicted as an octopus, in the center being the communist party itself.

“Please excuse us, We can’t produce as much as you can steal !”

“Does anybody still uses IE 6 ?”

And now, a big round of applause for Mr. Nicolae Parta, the only protestant from his little home town. For more days, he protested in front of the city hall of Baia de Aries gaining a lot of fame and admiration from all the country.

Romanian soups

Romanian cuisine has two types of soups : the clear soups (supă) and the ones that are sour because of different ingredients used (which we call ciorbă). Most of them have meat but vegetarians also have some options to choose from. We eat the soups with bread and sometimes we add sour cream in them or eat hot peppers as side dish.

Sour soups (ciorbă)

Peasant beef soup

This is one of the most appreciated soups by romanian people. Most of us consider that it has all the best ingredients that could be used in rural areas. The beef and the vegetables used make the soup quite unique taste and consistency wise. For the full experience, add a spoon of sour cream in the hot soup.

Meatball soup

The meatball soup was traditionally consumed in the winter times and so it’s a pretty fat soup since people needed calories to cope with the low temperatures. The meatballs are made out of minced meat mixed with rice and some spices.  As many other soups, we add to this one a spoon of sour cream right before consuming it.

Bean and smoked meat soup

Again, a soup consumed mainly in winter times when people in rural areas needed soups rich in fats for the cold temperatures. The smoked meat is the main “attraction” of this soup and it gives it quite a unique taste.

Tripe soup

This is by far the most controversial soup out of all the soups in romanian cuisine. This is because people either love it or are just disgusted by it. The disgusting part may come from the looks, the smell, the consistency or the ingredients used. The main ingredient is cow stomach and its consistency is somewhat gooey. When you order it you will receive some sour cream and a hot pepper, sometimes even pickles. You might also want to add vinegar, oil, salt or pepper since it should be left somewhat raw taste-wise. Although it might sound and look disgusting, you won’t lose anything if you try it and you might even end up enjoying it.

Vegetables soup (vegetarian dish)

The vegetables soup was consumed by people in rural areas during the lost fasts proceeding important religious holidays. This soup will have as much vegetables as possible and it’s the choice to take if you are vegetarian or on a diet :)

Clear soups (supă)

Romanian cuisine has two main types of clear soups (supă). Both of them use chicken broth so they are not an option for a vegetarian.  The first one is the Noodle ( Tăiţei) soup and has noodles beside the chicken broth and the summer vegetables. The second type of soup is the Dumpling (Găluşte) soup and contains dumplings made out of wheat cream and boiled with the vegetables.

Romanian starters/appetizers

Romanian cuisine uses somewhat spicy starters among a small glass of plum brandy (tuica). Keep in mind that the starters described here won’t always be found in restaurants. Nonetheless, this are the most common and delicious romanian starters:

Zacusca (vegetarian dish)

A widely spread dish across the Balkans ,Zacusca is a vegetable paste (eggplants, peppers, onions, tomatoes, carrots) obtained after cooking all these vegetables with oil. Originally it was prepared in large quantities in rural homes at the end of summer and kept in sterilized jars for the whole winter. Different recipes have different spices and so the final product can sometimes be very spicy . Romanians consume it sometimes as snack/light dinner or as appetizers and eat it on bread or toast.

Eggplant salad (vegetarian dish)

The eggplant salad (Salata de vinete) is a starter found around the Balkans and in Romania aswell. The salad is made of grilled, peeled and finely chopped eggplants, sunflower oil and chopped onions. Now, the recipe can have more or less onions and therefore be more or less spicy. Romanians eat this salad on a piece of bread or toast, sometimes with pickles or tomatoes.

Romanian bean dip (vegetarian dish)

It’s literally mashed beans mixed with oil and some spices like onion or garlic. It’s served on a piece of bread or toast and sometimes with a pickle on top.

Raw salad (vegetarian dish)

Mostly served as a starter, the raw salad contains apple, carrot and celery (all raw of course) mixed with mayonnaise. Some chefs sometimes mix it with chicken breast so if you are a vegetarian make sure you tell the chef not to use any.

Oven baked mushrooms with cheese

The mushrooms are turned upside down and filled with cheese (the type of cheese used depends on the recipe), butter and sometimes dill. All the mushrooms are then baked in the oven and they can be served as starter or sometimes as a side dish.

Toba

Toba is a romanian appetizer that is somewhat a combination between a salami and a sausage. Made out of pork jelly, skin, heart, kidneys and head meat all wrapped in the belly of the pork and then given a salami shape. Yes, we know, it sounds really gross and to some it also looks gross but is not that bad is you eat it with mustard or horseradish .

Sausages

There are high chances of finding smoked dry sausages as starters in restaurants. The most common ones are the Pleşcoi sausages (Pleşcoi is an area from Romania where the sausages are original from and they also can be fried in oil), babic or ghiudem (which are also spicy sausages/salami but not originally Romanian, although they are produced here as well now).

In some restaurants, you will be able to order a dish for one, two or more persons that contains a bit of more romanian starters. For example, if you will order a cheese dish you can expect to find will find cow, goat or sheep cottage cheese (telemea), caş, brânză de burduf or urdă. These types of cheese may sometimes be served with olives or red onions. A more general dish can have  babic or pleşcoi sausages (dried and spicy), smoked cheese, olives, onion, bell peppers or tomatoes and some pork meat.

Enjoy!

Romanian Cuisine

A lot of our tourists asked and keep asking us if we can recommend some traditional romanian dishes. Since we have a pretty big variety of dishes, we decided to write something about them here. So, if you want to try something traditional but you also want to know what it is you are eating before you see it on your plate, you can take a look at the dishes described here. You will find almost all the dishes that you will be able to find in a restaurant from starters to deserts or drinks

Enjoy your meal (poftă bună as we say in romanian) and happy reading!
